The Belfry Hotel & Resort achieves sustainability milestone with globally recognised EarthCheck certification
10 February 2025: Demonstrating its commitment to leading the industry on climate action and providing sustainable travel experiences for guests, The Belfry Hotel & Resort, in West Midlands, has officially achieved EarthCheck Benchmark Bronze status.
Judges for the globally recognised certification, which showcases a business’ dedication to its sustainability pathway, praised The Belfry’s incredible hard work in reaching this milestone and highlighted its commitment to preserving and enhancing its natural surroundings, cultural heritage, local community and economy.
Initiatives taken by the award-winning resort to reduce its carbon footprint include installing new kitchen equipment to filter and reuse cooking oil, saving 480 litres of oil each month; installing a new waste management stream which has separated 18.32 tonnes of dry mixed recycling since July; and fitting 39 waterless urinals, saving an estimated 900,000 litres of water per year. This is as well as switching to eco burners, saving 176kg of fuel cans from going to waste; installing six bee hives onsite that are now home to over 100,000 honey bees and bumble bees; sending no waste to landfill; and seeding out more than 1,100m² of wildflowers throughout 2024.
Wider ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) measures also include raising over £20,000 last year for the Teenage Cancer Trust, Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association and Hospitality Action, showcasing careers in hospitality to 120 children at the Springboard Takeover Day, and donating more than 10 bags of unclaimed lost property to charity every month.
Anna Hawkins, Sustainability Lead at The Belfry Hotel & Resort, said: “We take great care in protecting the environment. As one of the Midlands’ biggest hospitality providers, we want our guests to have peace of mind that a fantastic stay at The Belfry is a choice for positive climate action.
“As our EarthCheck accreditation shows, we’re delighted that the steps we’ve taken so far are making a real and tangible difference to both people and planet. But, of course, the work doesn’t stop here – we can’t wait to elevate our efforts even further this year and work towards achieving EarthCheck Silver Certification.”
In 2025, The Belfry is planning to increase its number of electric vehicle chargers, install solar panels, and complete work on a new waste2water treatment plant. This is as well as aiming to achieve a BREEAM Excellence Rating in the building of its flagship events space and its state-of-the-art new Leisure Club. All funds raised from the resort’s first-ever Belfry Classic Golf Day, in May, will also go towards supporting the MND Association and Hospitality Action.
