Nicolson Square Edinburgh takes spotlight at 2021 Fringe Festival

Nicolson Square Edinburgh, Central Hall Venues’ newest space, took the spotlight at the city’s iconic Fringe Festival when it was used by ITV’s Good Morning Britain to mark the opening of the event on Friday 6th August.  The venue provided the backdrop for Food Tank’s WeCameToDance event which featured on the programme.

GMB’s Juliet Dunlop was seen in NSE’s Great Hall interviewing Edinburgh Fringe Festival’s Chief Executive, Shona McCarthy, as dancers from Food Tank performed in the background.

It’s a high-profile start for NSE, a Category A listed building within the City of Edinburgh’s Methodist Church, which was launched by CHV earlier this year as a new conference and events centre. WeCameToDance by Food Tank, sees its debut at NSE after sell-out workshops in New York City had to be cancelled last year from a full run off-Broadway due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WeCameToDance is an interactive original musical telling the story of extra-terrestrial life arriving on Earth to warn its inhabitants of a climate crisis that their own planet has experienced. The show, tipped by Playbill Magazine to be ‘the next hottest trend’ will be held at NSE during the 2021 Festival Fringe until 28th August. Food Tank, which is putting on the show at NSE is one of the most engaged non-profits in food sustainability, agriculture, food policy and climate change.

Deborah Gallagher, NSE’s Head of Venue, comments: “We are delighted to welcome Food Tank’s WeCameToDance musical to Nicolson Square Edinburgh for its debut and also proud that the venue was used as the backdrop for the Fringe Festival’s opening on GMB. We always knew NSE was a well-known hub in the centre of Edinburgh, but this really puts it on the map as a new conference and events centre.”

“Food Tank is an organisation that fits well with our principles of ethics, integrity and sustainability so we are thrilled to have it as our first major event at NSE and that they chose to debut here at the Edinburgh Fringe,” she added.
