House of Scones, the Alex Whitmore Furlough story

Furloughed from day 1 of lockdown, for someone who is used to going a 100mph in work and in life it wasn’t long before I needed to do more than be a stay at home mum!

During a global pandemic my options were of course limited, but after making scones for neighbours and family as an occasional treat, I was soon making large batches daily for a local afternoon tea delivery company.

During the VE day Bank Holiday I baked around 320 plain scones, which included catering for several street parties in my area, and small boxes for friends’ own celebrations.

The build up to fathers day saw lots of enquiries for ‘scone boxes’ and it was then that House of Scones was officially born!

During the week I would experiment with new flavours and combinations, taking photos of the scones and building up an account on instagram with a decent following, soon after a Facebook page followed.

My branding is very rustic, all designed by myself, and my message is ‘artisan scones’.

I offer a bespoke, personalised service with an extensive menu of quirky and indulgent flavours, with the option of ‘mix and matching’. My scones come six to a box and include side pots such as clotted cream, jam, Nutella etc.I have built up a fabulous customer base with a lot of regulars, hand delivering in Kent and parts of South East London and posting around the UK.

My heart has always been in hospitality and events but I’m excited to see where my little sideline takes me, as I have lots of ideas and big plans for House of Scones in the future!
