Barbican to welcome The Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Conference

Next week, the Barbican welcomes the prominent Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat International Conference (CTBUH) 2024.

CTBUH is the international body and world’s leading nonprofit in the field of tall buildings – including skyscrapers, and sustainable urban design – and the future of cities. Its annual conference is internationally recognised as being the centre for discussions on architectural innovation and sustainable urban development. It brings together experts passionate about shaping our cities’ futures: from architects and engineers to urban planners, developers and other leading voices in the field.

This year’s conference will take place 23-27 September, making use of spaces and the Barbican including the Hall and Foyers, Cinema One, Auditorium One and Two, as well as the versatile Frobisher rooms.

The theme, “New or Renew: Addressing the Density Dilemma” will explore at the challenges facing the construction industry today, and poses the question: ‘Should we build new buildings, or should we renew the existing ones?’

With an estimated 1,300+ attendees and 200 speakers from over 50 countries, for three days the Barbican is set to be the hub of pioneering discussions on urban development, tall buildings and sustainability.

As one of the UK’s architectural icons, located within the City of London, the Barbican is the perfect setting for the conference. But more than this, the venue’s cultural significance aligns with the CTBUH’s mission: to explore how increased urban density and vertical growth can support more sustainable and healthy cities.  It is also demonstrative of this year’s conference theme. A Brutalist city within a city structure, raised above street level, the Barbican is the iconic result of one of London’s most ambitious and unique architectural achievements.

The event will feature an array of presentations and panel discussions from global thought leaders on the central urban density theme. There will also be an awards program that recognises excellence in tall building projects. Outside of the core conference, delegates can enjoy a series of technical workshops, networking opportunities, social events, an awards ceremony, and off-site programs offering tours of significant London developments.

Jackie Boughton, Director of Commercial at the Barbican, commented: “We are thrilled to host the CTBUH International Conference for 2024. The Barbican serves as a creative catalyst, offering a space not only to experience groundbreaking art from around the globe but also to build and nurture connections, spark debate, and bring together critical business insights. This makes it an ideal central London venue for delegates to engage in meaningful discussions about the future of our cities.”

CTBUH CEO Javier Quintana de Uña remarked: “The Barbican is the perfect choice for our 2024 International Conference. The uniqueness of the venue, its cultural importance and history perfectly embodies the 2024 conference theme and since London is one of the most vibrant centres of urban innovation, we believe it’ll inspire some thought-provoking discussions about the future of sustainable vertical urbanism.”
