15Hatfields shares carbon emission insight with a new campaign

15Hatfields is using its insight from being the first business meetings and events venue to measure all three scopes of carbon emissions in its annual carbon footprint report to encourage and help the industry reduce its carbon footprint.

The leading sustainable venue, which is based on London’s South Bank, is launching its Counting the Cost of Carbon campaign following work with Greengage Solutions and Smart Carbon to improve the data available for tracking carbon emissions at events.

Thanks to its ongoing work towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the venue was certified carbon neutral in December 2024 – with the ultimate goal of becoming carbon negative. Its priority is to reduce carbon at source and then offset the remaining balance via Carbon Neutral Britain.

The campaign, which forms part of 15Hatfields’ mission to become a carbon negative venue and its ongoing commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, has seen the venue collaborate on the development of Greengage’s new carbon calculator tool.

As the first venue to achieve the leading environmental sustainability and efficiency consultants’ pinnacle ECOsmart Platinum status in 2021, 15Hatfields is playing an instrumental role in the development of Greengage’s innovative calculator designed to provide event planners with a user-friendly, post-event report.

Every organiser hosting an event at 15Hatfields is now able to receive a complimentary report displaying a breakdown of carbon emissions across five key areas of impact.

The report estimates the total savings achieved by hosting at an ECOsmart Platinum venue certified for its outstanding sustainable practices and initiatives. And, to help planners contextualise their impact, it provides a meaningful comparison to the carbon footprint required to make a regular cup of coffee, all the way from production to consumption. Therefore, the higher number of coffees outlined, the greater the carbon emissions of the event.

15Hatfields’ Counting the Cost of Carbon campaign draws on aspects of all three scopes of carbon emissions. Scope 1 being the direct emissions controlled by the venue, scope 2 the indirect energy emissions generated by its purchased electricity, for example, and scope 3 its other indirect emissions. When information from their suppliers is not available 15Hatfields work closely with Smart Carbon to utilise government-approved factors in the calculations.

Warren Campbell, 15Hatfields’ general manager, said: “While scope 3 emissions are typically more challenging to monitor because they occur outside of an organisation’s control, such as the services offered by our supply chain or food waste, we were keen to go to that level of detail to ensure our clients receive the most accurate reading as physically possible.”

He added: “While it is no mean feat to be able to report on all three scopes, it is essential to building a picture of carbon emissions across the many factors that influence an event. Ultimately, if you’re not striving to collect and input as accurate and reliable data as possible, it will impact the results and potentially give a false indication on where the priorities for reduction may lay.”

Louise Boyse, Greengage’s commercial and business development director, said: “We are extremely grateful to the support from 15Hatfields to help us enhance the development of our carbon calculator tool to ensure it provides useful data, which is relatable. It was fantastic that we were able to share with attendees of the Meetings Industry Association’s ESG Workshop held in the venue in August 2024, a first glimpse of the level of reporting that is now available to event planners.”

As part of its campaign, 15Hatfields is sharing its annual carbon emissions report on its website, as well as detail around what clients can expect to find in their complimentary post-event report. Over the coming months it will be sharing a wealth of other helpful information to assist the wider industry in its quest to reduce its carbon footprint.
