Historic Leeds Castle expands M&E offering with unique new event space

The majestic Leeds Castle, located near Maidstone, Kent, has enhanced its meetings and events space with the addition of its Grade I listed The Gatehouse.

Occupying the south side of the entrance to the Leeds Castle grounds and forming an imposing approach to the Castle Island, The Gatehouse provides a distinctive setting for private dinners for between 20 and 40 guests or evening events.

Situated an hour from London, The Gatehouse includes a reception area, dining room and restrooms. This self-contained venue can be booked alongside conferences at the Castle or Maiden’s Tower as an evening reception or breakout space during the day.

Dating from the 12th century, the historic Norman Gatehouse is the principal entrance to the site and is one of the oldest parts of the castle, which itself dates from the medieval period.

The Gatehouse has been through numerous building and renovation phases. In the 1280s, it was significantly enlarged by Edward I to reflect the growing need for stronger defences, and this forms the foundation of The Gatehouse that stands today. It was then further refurbished and extended under the instruction of different royal owners in both the 13th and 14th centuries.

During the Tudor period, stables and a lodge were constructed, and, in the 20th century, The Gatehouse was modified for use as a squash court and garages. Today, The Gatehouse is a fine example of a castle gate and associated apartments, demonstrating both the defence and domestic occupation of the castle.

The Gatehouse complements Leeds Castle’s existing range of meetings and event spaces, suitable for a variety of corporate gatherings, from meetings and conferences to team building and away days. There is also a diverse range of accommodation options throughout the property, including within the Castle itself.

Jenny George, Sales & Hospitality Manager, Leeds Castle, said: “For centuries, Leeds Castle has brought people together for relaxation, reflection, entertainment and hospitality. We are delighted to continue this tradition with the opening of The Gatehouse for corporate dinners and events, and we hope that many more guests will be able to enjoy this incredible historic building as well as the delights of the wider Leeds Castle estate.”
